Minnesota's Constitutional attempt

So I see in my local Daily, legislators will put forward a bill to take what's already in state law - marriage is between one man and one woman - and add it as a constitutional amendment in 2012. While I applaud them for letting us vote on a constitutional amendment, it's the subject with which I have issues.

Here's my take, which I've posted on a couple other sites:

"It's disgraceful...promoting discrimination at the Constitutional level. As a nation that battled discrimination of many flavors throughout our history, it's a travesty to see something like this in today's legislature. While I strongly disagree with this amendment, I would personally like to get rid of the term "marriage" in every government document and replace it will a term like "civil union"...blind to race, color and sexual orientation... Let Churches deal with "marriage"."

In weeks filled with union/government protests in Wisconsin, bombings and unrest in Libya, the supreme power of our Earth sheds devastation upon the shores of Japan and other Pacific-touching regions. My heart goes out to those families affected by this horrendous tragedy. It was said that the tsunami generated from the quake spread across the Pacific Ocean at an astounding 500-mph; it's hard to comprehend such speed. There's no doubt our globe is united, supporting Japan at this moment - much like the other nations which have endured similar tragedies. Battles over collective bargaining, freedom from tyranny and political partisanship, can be brushed aside at a moments notice - our planet has no agenda but its own.

It was a big buzz word in 2008. Now, in 2010, it's back with the same chant, although the party is different...
If we want to get this country moving again, differences in ideology / party platforms / beliefs need to be put aside. Stop the partisan politics; it does nothing but stall the progress of this great nation.

Just got my preview of the Fall Xbox 360 update... I'm a kid in a candy store with the update; Facebook, Zune TV/Movies - and soon Sky TV. Should be interesting...I should invest in the Jasper 360 to help reduce the electric bill. With all these enhancements, it may be on a lot more.

Cash for Clunkers

In the linked article, our Governor decides that "Cash for Clunkers" is...well, read it for yourself (nonsensical - for those that don't)

My parent's had a saying - a common one at that - "If you have nothing nice to say...don't say anything at all?" Apparently T-Paw can't keep his yapper shut. Listen, the program isn't perfect, but if it's giving people an incentive to ditch trucks and SUVs for more fuel efficient cars that will lessen our need to fuel up and consume Saudi and Venezuelan oil I'm all for it. Hell, it gives the automakers some demand to put people back to work...

Before you anoint me as a Cash 4 Clunkers fanboy, I don't have my head-in-the-sand about the after effects of the program. What will happen when it's over? Is the economy primed enough...or will it be back to toilet.

Time will tell..

Will he be the "savior" that our nation hopes for - need? We know he can light a room with words of eloquence, but action upon these words will be the big test to show his mettle.

Ahh.... November 4th, 2008 will be quite a day in history. I'll admit, I bought two papers - 1 for reading, the other to stash with my collection of other world changing headlines. I've been trying to find some type of sleeve to put my collection in, but I haven't found one. Hidden in a dark drawer will have to do until I can find something.

Honestly, I'm very excited for the Obama-era. Having voted for him, I'm glad to see I helped contribute to a change in direction that I hope will steer us away from the 8 years of torment George W. Bush has done towards our economy and global standing. Having voted for GW back in 2004, I wanted to see - in a sadistic way - how he could further damage our fair nation. With the past few months as a good example of what 8 years of GW, 6 years of a Republican majority in Congress and 2 years of Democratic majority, I'd say he helped illustrate what can be done.

I liked McCain overall; he was one guy that I thought was pretty moderate and a "renegade" to some of his party's principals. He would've been a great candidate to vote for back in 2000 had he gotten the nomination - but big oil won out and we know the rest is history. Fast forward to today and this McCain just didn't feel like the same guy. I didn't feel the soothing reassurance that Obama excudes - much like a scared child gets from a calming voice. We know Obama has the fantastic oratory skills but there will be questions if those skills translate into real action or if they are just empty words. Nonetheless, President-elect Obama will take the rains in approximately 70+ days and we'll see how he will lead the country.

When hearing of other nations celebrating the election of Obama, it provides me hope that perhaps we will not be looked upon crossly, but with a new vigor that helps re-establishes American on this blue and green globe. In today's economy, we are truly global and it's important that we remain a player and partner in this new economy. I've just felt the past 8 years we've taken steps to tarnish our image and reduce our role as a steward.

I'm aware, however, that the President is not the only player in politics. With state and federal elections for Congress being counted and finalized, we must remember that they are the key in getting the country on track. They need to remember: 1) Republicans bought on credit; Democrats need to reign in spending. Both options are not good; there needs to be leadership that recognizes cutting isn't always the best answer while recognizing, too, that spending is not always prudent. 2) Fight "Party Think". Too often plenty of good bills/amendments get voted down because they followed party lines. It's time to vote based on the values and beliefs of the legislator - not the party platform. Perhaps if this were done, compromises would be easier and there'd be less gridlock.

You may have read some of McCain's comments today about the "reckless conduct, corruption and unbridled greed" that has rocked Wall Street this week....

...he's right to the point we're in this mess because of the greed and corruption. ...but his Party, who has held majority in Congress for quite some time until recently (not to say Dems aren't immune to the criticism), have shaped our Economy of today. The ideals of the "free-market" are good in text books - they're black and white, but their policies have shaped our market into corruption, symbols of greed and short-sightedness. Fat cats get fatter, and the trickle-down theory dries up to keep them just as fat. Tax breaks for corps will do nothing; most will keep the difference and stuff it into their pockets - doing nothing to help steer our economy in the right direction.

My passion du jour is most definitely the controversy of oil prices. While I cannot comment about the previous cycle in the late 70's, I am one of many feeling the stink of required petrol fill up today (You'll probably slap me to hear I complain about a meager $160/month - but still...) .

While you can certainly make a connection between oil prices and oil company profits, I cannot hold them 100% responsible for the rise in the price of black gold. We can blame in no particular order:
1) Rise in plastics - from water bottles to plastic bags
2) Rise in use of low-mpg vehicles for every-day use in the USA.
3) Increased demand in China and India (although I understand China has a higher fuel economy standard than the good-old USA).
4) Other factors I'm not forgetting.

But what I find most disconcerting is found in the links below:

I encourage you to read each link and see for yourself. If the article is accurate, most my frustration can be directed toward Bill Clinton, Republicans and the idiots at Enron.

Under Senate Bill 3283, named the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000 (Similiar to a HR 5660 in late 2000), the energy market was now deregulated (signed into law by President Clinton under a 11,000 page appropriations bill). Economists can tout the strengths/benefits of the "free market" but once you get profit barons involved, it no longer becomes free. It becomes the Greed Market....the downfall of capitalism...the downfall of the free market.

The problem in politics these days is partisanship - or a different 'flavor' of "Group Think": politicians aligning themselves with one party and sticking to "the party lines" even if they may not believe that specific line. America today needs politicians that are not afraid to disagree with today's Democratic or Republican line.

I will admit, I voted for Jesse Ventura in 1998 - because I grew tired of the partisan BS that lived in the Capitol. 10 years later, I see no different. He appealed to my "anti-politician" attitude - a regular Joe Schmoe (OK, with some former acting and Hollywood experience. ;) that wasn't going to abide by the Group Think mentality. During his 4 years in office, he wasn't he the best but a least he tried to open the rusty Capitol windows to bring in some type of new air.

We need some of JV spunk in a candidate. This message of "We're not going to take it anymore" by the voters needs to be appealed. We thought this when the Republicans were handed their butts in 2006, but even now the Democrats can't seem to find their way to the shore either. Blame the 'lack of veto override', blame the Republican-led Executive branch and/or Congressional minority, but either way, both sides should pick up their erasers and rid themselves of the line in favor of the public good.

Perhaps it is time to fight for that 3rd party - to beak the tug of war our two parties are enthralled. I thought Peter Hutchinson, the Independence Party nominee for MN Governor in 2006 was a will balanced guy; he had some great fiscal ideas that looked to benefit our fair state and appease most. Unfortunately, Minnesota chose the familiar - the broken, way of looking at politics.

That Democratic or Republican rebel may exist - he/she may be in diapers or college. Hopefully they will present themselves so voters like me - disenfranchised, skeptical and cynical - can feel comfortable with American Politics. ...but the likely hood of this is no more realistic than the strong 3rd party.

One can wish...that's my political wish on this Father's Day.

On the day of celebration for our youngest son's 1st birthday, comes a gust of sadness regarding a political icon.

My Sunday's won't be the same with the passing of Tim Russert. Whenever church was not on the schedule, you'd find the TV (or TIVO) glued to "Meet the Press" (or if the kids let me). It was always a pleasure watching this even keeled guy talk to the politics rubes - especially with the tough questions and the fluff questions. My family's prayers to the Russert family.

...as a person who has criticized "blogs" as nothing more than an electronic journal (it's not sliced bread) here I am creating one of my own. But the strangest thing happened as I was running around the track at Lifetime today with both CNN and FOX plastered on the DLP big screens - a realization that in the era of today's politics: I have thoughts I need to publish.

I cannot guarantee my arguments are iron-clad, or holy as swiss cheese; I can't guarantee citations or verifiable facts. I can guarantee my words - my thoughts will be from inside - through the paradigm accumulated over my 31 years of experiences.
